Dave and Chris discuss the news!
- Dave just got back from a holiday. He couldn’t keep away though and posted videos from the beach!
- Dave is focusing on logistics, using shipping from DHL and WordPress / Woocommerce for the interface.
- Marketing is tough for engineers but David Kronstein did things right. Spending marketing dollars on hardware for people to review.
- EAGLE has switched to a subscription model. Dave made a video about it.
- Switching to KiCad? Chris made Getting To Blinky 4.0 which is a decent start at trying out the program.
- Watching technical videos? Chris recommends the Video Speed Controller Chrome plugin. Speed up or down any HTML5 video.
- A bit of a jump. LTspice went from version 4 to version…17! Likely due to the ADI acquisition of LinearTech. We interviewed creator and maintainer of LTspice, Mike Engelhardt!
- Chris noted that the Falstad Simulator (which went online a couple years ago) now has current and voltage visualization, similar to the EveryCircuit android app.
- Nvidia simulated photographs of a moonwalk to debunk online wackos. The Mythbusters had done a similar thing with a physical model.
- The Trump administration is messing with science. This will not stand. We enjoyed the badlands national park reactions.
- The AT&T archive videos are fantastic, check out this one on wave behavior
- Jeff Keyzer (Mightyohm, yessah!) posted his pictures of his tour to Bell Labs.
- When you’re depressed (or stressed) make something.
- Dave is working on his custom multimeter, almost as a project manager. A new role for Dave!
- The gadget apocalypse is upon us!
- Captain Disillusionment did another video about the Cicret bracelet
- GoPro slashing staff.
- Chris was intrigued by a new variation on a business model showcased at TechCrunch Disrupt.
Do not forget to announce the drawing for AoE

Chris, I have been looking for a free alternative to EveryCircuit ever since my NC bit the dust. Everycircuit gave me the ability to actually visualize current flow in my mind and has changed the way I understand circuits. Thank you dearly for sharing the Falstad circuit simulator with us. I found a downloadable Circuit Simulator based on Falstad’s code available on SourceForge called CircuitMod
http://sourceforge.net/projects/circuitmod/ or http://circuitmod.sourceforge.net/ which was August of 2016. It claims to have expanded Falstad’s Java circuit Simulator into CMOS, LED Arrays, and PIC MCU’s. I am eager to give it a try.
If you can suggest any other simulators which graphically illustrate current flow like EveryCircuit and Falstad, please do share.
For RF circuit simulation I recommend QUCS, Quite Universal Circuit Simulator. If you can learn to use LTSpice, QUCS will come naturally. There are a few tutorial videos on youtube that help too.
Thanks for the wonderful episode you guys. Keep up the spadoinkle work!

Regarding playback speed for youtube, if you want faster/slower than what they offer, you can do this :

Where did Dave post his graphic design job? Reddit? 99Designs?
Similar to Dave’s video on the economics of doing youtube videos, would love to see an episode on the business of using ebay/amazon/etc from a hobby electronics point of view.. and/or shipping/cms logistics.

He posted it on his forum: http://www.eevblog.com/forum/jobs/small-adobe-illustrator-front-panel-design-job/

Speed 3, really? I have problems to understand speed 2, even for native language videos. But 1.5 is fine for some videos, and you can select this in the settings in the Youtube player window, bottom right.
Chris Gammell says
Yeah, 3x could be a little tough. But the real benefit of the plugin is that it works on almost any video site, including Netflix and Vimeo.

subscription based is not that evil! yes for those who use the software all the time not that good, but if you just work as project base or just need to finish something, subscribe and unsubscribe when you don’t use it. The subscription model tend to be cheaper than buying the license. I am not defending subscription base, but it has its own pros.
to me going full subscription base for a software is wrong, they have to had both models.

Hi guys. Your comments about science denial really struck a chord with me. Over the past few months, I’ve been feeling the same way, basically upset that such a large part of society is capable of ignoring, denying, or despising scientific facts… including members of my own family. I’ve found some interesting resources and research suggesting various methods to improve things. I’m on mobile right now, but when I get home I can post some of what I’ve found. Do you want to start a reddit thread, or is this the best spot to discuss it?
I think the country just had a major wake up call, and we need to grab the momentum while we have it.
Chris Gammell says
I think our subreddit would probably be the best place to do that.

“Science, Not Silence” sounds like a good name for a podcast 🙂
