Dave is right about charging for the software, and I think Dr. Sanghi’s decision is more than generous. Microchip doesn’t paywall any functionality, just a nice-to-have, while too many microprocessor makers and other companies are becoming “lock happy.” Heck, even the car thieves are willing to pay for their software because they recognize the value – though I wonder if it’s also because the purchase price includes updates.
A lifetime ago I worked for a software company that used to give free Ada compilers to university CS programs, but the salespeople found that some schools they visited hadn’t even taken off the shrink wrap. If it just showed up for free then it had no value.
