You are supposed to be able to use Raspberry Pis to also transmit RF over GPIO, but maybe not at 1Ghz. The gigatron is probably useless really, but the easiest way to alter it would probably install a dip with a lever for the ROM and reprogram it yourself with your software and a EEPROM programmer.
