I wish to point out that computer science programs were widespread and popular well before the 1990s. While I was at my (very large) Uni in the late 70’s, there were actually three CS programs – one in the College of Business, one in the College of Arts and Sciences, and one in the College of Engineering. It was in the mid-70s that the EE department created the Computer Engineering (or maybe ECE?) program.
One other things about some of the dips in computer science – I remember outsourcing really becoming popular in the early 2000s, and everyone was telling the kids not to major in compute science because it was all moving abroad.
