  1. To be completely honest. Security booted me out after chasing me around the second day. I snuck back in and got caught a second time by security + DesignCon promoters. I was allowed back in without them.
    The facility doesn’t seem to have a problem with skates, since I’ve been to 4-5 shows there and worn them. They should reconsider their policy, before I speak for them at ESC in a few months. 🙂

    • Seems like a good idea to me.Lots to see, not a lot of time to see it. Every one should wear them! Then again I like to Annoy the establishment just for the hell of it, so maybe it’s just us Lol. The world would be black and white without a little colour eh?

    • Now I know who it was that stopped by our DesignCon booth late on Tuesday with rollerskates….

      As for what is DesignCon, the papers and panels tend more towards high-speed digital design topics. It is now owned by EE Times, before that it was the IEC. I have not been to ESC, but I would expect more of a software/firmware focus at ESC. DesignCon is more focused on hardware design.

  2. Cadence Allegro – pretty professional – also doesn’t have most footprints. It seemed really silly to me too, but I guess Dave’s comment makes sense.

  3. On TI’s website you can download CAD footprints for many of their parts, but currently they only have them in Allegro, Boardstation and PADS-PowerPCB formats. They have a page (link above) where you can vote for additional formats, so I suggest you tell your listeners to go and vote at least for Eagle, and maybe KiCAD and gEDA too.

  4. Manning as in “manning a stand” isn’t sexist. It originates from the latin for hand (manus). Feel free to use it and upset rabid PC obsessives who don’t realise this, and jump for the obvious but wrong explanation.

  5. Just wanted to share that I made my own isolation transformer out of a couple of dead battery backup transformers. It handles somewhere around 500VA before the output line sags 10% but it doesn’t get warm at all.

  6. Mentor Graphics has been calling and emailing me a lot recently about their “new” component layout software, which (of course) they are charging an enormous amount for. Better yet, they will only sell it for specific CAD packages. I mentioned I use Eagle and another CAD program and was informed I had to purchase a separate package for each. Greedy pigs…

  7. Best show yet!! The back and forth flowed great! Dave and Jeff both super knowledgeable, and Jeff seems like a real nice guy!!

    Just curious, on the workbench pictures, how do you tag and label the items on the desk? Is there a specific software program for that, or some special hidden option in flickr?

    Thanks! I had a great time recording the show and it’s a lot of fun to work with both Chris and Dave.

    Flickr (the website that hosts the photos) allows you to create “notes” on your photos. If the photo permissions allow it, you can access this feature by selecting Actions->Notes in the menu above the photo.
