Even the best equipment needs to get recalibrated every now and then, could the same be said for our technical and moral compasses.
recalibrated idiot (notmyrealname) says
Just following on from the thing about trusting authority: how many IDE, dev kits, compiler PID controllers do we trust on the authority of the people that brought them into the world. Further more the hierarchy of the purer sciences: pure maths -> applied maths/physics -> chemistry do we have to `trust` as engineers just to get on with the job of widget maken? Even in my chicken run there is a pecking order, I guess as humans it would be nice if the top hen is there because she’s looking out for the rest of the coop, not just to see how much of the best grain is for her (I had roosters for a while and there are analogies there for some other time(s) …)

regarding. critical thinking here is this one about falling angels and climing spes:
All right,” said Susan. “I’m not stupid. You’re saying humans need… fantasies to make life bearable.”
REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
“Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little—”
YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
“So we can believe the big ones?”
YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
“They’re not the same at all!”
YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET—Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME…SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.
“Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what’s the point—”
MY POINT EXACTLY.

Amazing episode. People like Shahriar have this great ability to explain complex devices and their inner workings in very simple words. The theAmpHour episodes never let down anyone intended to learn something new.
