Lui Cirocco says
AFAIK Oliver Heaviside rationalised Maxwell’s experimental equations into the four equations that we all know and love. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Heaviside#Innovations_and_discoveries. Heaviside was talented, Maxwell was gentry and so Heaviside got naming rights on a step function, Maxwell got naming rights on … well one of the all encompassing rules of physics. Heaviside also had my heart for getting amongst it, and not worrying too much about analytical correctness of the maths:
“Mathematics is of two kinds, Rigorous and Physical. The former is Narrow: the latter Bold and Broad. To have to stop to formulate rigorous demonstrations would put a stop to most physico-mathematical inquiries. Am I to refuse to eat because I do not fully understand the mechanism of digestion?”
Anyway, hope that entertains as well as educates… have fun!
Dan Arves says
Thanks for pointing that out 🙂
There are many names in the field of science that have not received proper recognition. Oliver Lodge, Joseph Swan, Chandra Bose, etc. etc.
Vikas says
Not to be pedantic but two and half orders of magnitude equals 316 because its a logarithmic scale (10^2.5). Congratulations on 500 episodes and hope you reach many more orders of magnitude
Dan Arves says
I thought that too, but then orders of magnitude are supposed to be a rough approximation of a large quantity (in many contexts) and the Log10 of 500 = 2.69 ~ 2.5 so it kinda makes sense too
Adrian says
Following Dave’s argument, Australia isn’t a self-sustaining colony to this day. 😉
Congratulations on the 0.5k episode!
Aissa Azzaz says
Congratulations to making it to the 500 episode

Hmm seems that my comment didn’t get through earlier so I’ll post it again.. Maybe Chris deleted it so Dave wouldn’t know that he is secretly working with the Japanese!
“Semiconductor Manufacturing Process for Minimal Fab”

Congrats on the 0.5k! 😀
Chris Gammell says
Hunh, didn’t see that link come through before. Interesting though! So all you’re saying is I have to purchase those millions of dollars of equipment and stick them in my house (or on a very large desk)….and we’d have at home chip fabbing! 😀
Also, I did take 3 semesters of Japanese, but alas, it’s all gone. So I doubt I’d be a good fit for working with them.
gueststar says
cheers to the 500, i did listen to a lot of them, its kind of my favourite radio show. Thanks a lot for putting all the effort into it and helping us stay up to date.
oh segway into up to date, rumors about maxim and analog 🙂
Alexander says
Bobiverse #4 will be out soon!
Chris Gammell says
WHAT??? That is VERY exciting.
